چکیده

Since the early 1980s close contact with animals or animal products infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy has posed a putative risk of infection with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Several groups with potentially high exposure have already been identified. To study whether transmissible spongiform encephalopathy has had any effect on people working in animal husbandry and slaughter, we used national mortality records to examine patterns of mortality from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and other dementias during 1979-80 and 1982-96.

Cows for fear: is BSE a threat to human health? Bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

In 1996, a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD)-a disease that causes lack of coordination, muscle twitching or jerking, dementia, and, eventually, death-suddenly appeared in Great Britain. It is believed that the victims contracted the disease from eating the beef of cattle stricken with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. As of December 1997, at least 25 peo...

Polymorphism of Prion Protein Gene (PRNP) in Iranian Holstein and Two Local Cattle Populations (Golpayegani and Sistani) of Iran

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a fatal infectious neurodegenerative disease in cattle, characterized by the accumulation of an abnormal, proteaseresistant prion protein (PrPSc) in the brain. BSE is similar to scrapie in sheep and goats and Creuzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. Susceptibility in cattle hasbeen shown to be under the influence of two polymorphic locations, which are...

Mortality from dementias and neurodegenerative disorders in people aged 15-64 in England and Wales in 1979-96.

There is now good evidence that the new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease first identified in 1996 is caused by exposure to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Because Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease can be difficult to diagnose, it is possible that cases of sporadic and new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease have occurred that were not correctly diagnosed because postmortem or neuropathologica...

Human Prion Disease and Relative Risk Associated with Chronic Wasting Disease

The transmission of the prion disease bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) to humans raises concern about chronic wasting disease (CWD), a prion disease of deer and elk. In 7 Colorado counties with high CWD prevalence, 75% of state hunting licenses are issued locally, which suggests that residents consume most regionally harvested game. We used Colorado death certificate data from 1979 throug...

Assessment of the risk posed by bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle in Great Britain and the impact of potential changes to current control measures.

We extended an existing back-calculation model to analyse data on reported clinical cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), data from random testing of healthy animals slaughtered in abattoirs and testing data from animals reported as sick or dying on the farm. Extensive analysis of demographic data was also undertaken. We estimated past and current BSE infection prevalences in the cat...
